Coming down off the great wall

After a long, hard day of climbing the Great Wall you really don't want to climb back down. Fortunately Chinese people are incredibly smart. They setup an "Inertia Ropeway" which allows you to get down from the Great Wall with the greatest of ease.

I've been attending a small private Chinese language school here in Beijing in an attempt to improve my Mandarin language skills; which are currently at the baby talk level. The school took a trip out to the Simatai section of the great wall. Previously I had only visited badaling so it was nice to see a different part of the wall, especially one that is less touristy.

I shot this video several weeks ago and after I shot it the air cleared up for a few days and then got worse again. The last two days the SEPA index has been over 100. Fortunately today the rains and wind came to wash and blow away all of the pollution! yay!

Shanghai Drupal user meetup

I was fortunate enough to be in Shanghai for their Drupal user meetup. It was great to meet all of them and see the projects that they are working on. Shanghai has a good number of Drupal developers and some of them have worked on some really cool projects. For me the highlight of the entire meetup was when one of the guys introduced himself as "ian" and just in case you didn't know how to pronounce it, it is "Ian" of Deb-ian.

Yes! There are super Chinese geeks! I love this place!

Track the group at groups.drupal.org/Shanghai, they are growing quickly.

The picture is of my new "little red book" (he he) which I received after I gave blood at the expat show. My blood type is one of those nifty types that can be used in a lot of people and its clean so I try to give whenever I can.

For no good reason we subjected ourselves to the expat show in Beijing. I wouldn't say it was horrible but I wouldn't say it was mind blowing either. It was what it was, a show for expats. I'd go again next year if they have free stuff, its free to get into to, and its convenient to get to.

Lately I haven't been feeling well and I've been meaning to go to a local Chinese medicine business situated just down the street. Putting two and two together and mixing in a bit of masochism for good measure I went and tried Cupping.

While in Troy I spent quite a bit of time at the Sanctuary for Independent media. I've known about the Sanctuary for Independent Media for quite some time. When I lived in NYC and worked for MNN I saw pictures and heard stories of its barnraising. The Sanctuary is an amazing place that allows individuals to express their first amendment rights, helps to foster the creative processes, and just plainly creates amazing videos.

I love running into independent media places such as this one. Troy is full of them too its amazing.

Erie Canal

I remember learning about the Erie canal when I was really young but never thought I'd actually see it. In fact I completely forgot that the Erie canal linked the Hudson river with one of the great lakes (Erie). While I was in town Andrew and Vickie were kind enough to take me on a bike ride around Troy, NY and during the bike ride they mentioned riding over to the first lock of the Erie Canal. I probably sounded like a five year old when I yelled out that I really, really, really wanted to see the start of the canal.

Its not as big as I thought it'd be but it was still cool to see.

The day after Boston DrupalCon 2008 a nice, and big, code sprint was held. People from all over the world came together to collaborate for a full day of working on modules, themes, and Drupal core. Its amazing to watch the community get together!

About two weeks ago I took a two night trip to Harbin. The first night I spent on the train leaving Beijing around 5pm at night and arriving at 5am the next morning. I then spent one night in Harbin. Harbin was a lovely -17 Celsius while I was there and even though I felt I was going to freeze and then break into little pieces it was a great experience.

Would I go back? ya.... in the summer

This spring festival Diana and I went to ZhongShan（中山）and Guangzhou (广州) to celebrate Spring Festival. In the South of China they celebrate spring festival by having a large flower market as opposed to the North of China where they celebrate with fireworks. Both of the festivities are quite nice.

To celebrate the dead custom asks that one burn an object to be sent to the deceased. In recent years those objects have changed from the once popular paper boats and paper money to houses, watches, and cars. This car was filmed at a monastery in Hong Kong it would most likely be burned to honor a well loved one that has passed on.

On our last trip to Hong Kong I went out to Big Wave bay hoping to catch any wave that I could possibly catch. Surfing season in Hong Kong is about 2 months long (late Jan - Early Mar ish) and exists in about 2, sometimes 3, locations in Hong Kong. I caught all the right buses and made my way out there but sadly there were no waves to be had. :(

Spring Festival

Diana and I are heading to Guangzhou 广州 to spend Spring Festival (aka: Chinese New Year) with her extended family/friends. I'll be offline for the next few days so I'll leave you with this short video of the spring festival Christmas tree ;), well its not a Christmas tree but it used in roughly the same way, during the holiday everyone buys a tree and then discards it afterwards. At least this one has fruit!

Spring festival Ice storm

for 春假 (Chun Jia aka. Spring Festival aka Chinese New Years) Diana and I decided to head down to Hong Kong as well as to ZhongShan 中山. On Friday afternoon we boarded the overnight train to Hong Kong and had a really great afternoon and evening on the train. On Saturday morning we woke up on a stopped train about 10 hours north of Hong Kong.

An ice storm ripped through the middle of China destroying crops, causing havoc on the roads, and downing power lines.
Our train was electric.
There was no electricity
5 hours behind schedule became 9 hours and that turned into 12 hours behind schedule finally we arrived a full 24 hours behind schedule.

This video was taken before, during and after.

Wuhan at midnight

A teaser to a much longer video about our experience getting stuck on a train in Hunan, China. The region was hit with an ice storm during the middle of the night and all of the electrical lines powering the train stopped functioning thus our train stopped.

This video was taken at midnight as I was looking at the other trains that were stuck with us. Oh how I love ice storms

Importance of reading Chinese

If you're expecting pork sauce you might want to learn to read a few Chinese characters. The English on this menu read "Seasonal vegetables in Pork Sauce", The Chinese read "Seasonal Vegetables [with] frog"... Guess what it really was.

There are advantages to reading Chinese.

Government News

How do you know what time it is in China? Well if its between 7:00 and 7:30 the T.V will tell you. The government likes to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to see and hear what is going on in China especially the new developments, new relationships, new wonderful things, new super wonderful things. Actually I think everything is absolutely wonderful around 7:00 to 7:30.

P.S Don't get my site blocked it'll make my life much, much harder. Comment to me in person if you think you might be including some certain keywords that rhyme with monoism (I'm serious)

My first bike in Beijing

I have been in China now for about 3 months and I finally purchased my very own bike. Although its the middle of winter and I can't ride it that often it is still nice to own a bike. Beijing is the "Kingdom of Bicycles" and I LOVE IT. Now if it'll stay that way with car ownership on the rise I don't know but I hope it will.

96!

Wow I'm actually learning something. Two days ago I had my first Chinese writing test. The teacher said a word and we had to write out that word. Books closed and the whole nine.
It was only 21 words and I studied all of them the night before so it wasn't exactly like a standard test but I still wrote 21 Chinese characters in less than 10 minutes so I'm proud of myself.

OK watch the video.

New Years!

New years past a few weeks ago but I didn't have the time to edit/post this video. This new years we headed out to D-22 in Beijing to see some of the local acts play out 2007/ play in 2008. The video is quickly edited (like all of mine) and does little more than show off the local music talent. They weren't bad at all, I liked it

Unfortunately New Years' isn't quite the fanfare it is in the U.S and the band as well as most of the crowd forget to even do a countdown. The expats in the crowd went ahead and did the countdown during a song break. Oh well the "real" new years is coming up that will be a completely different story.

Paying the electric bill

Native Beijingers will be like "so" when they watch this but its something new to me "so" here it is.

This is how you pay your electric bill in Beijing. I purchased 200 electric credits at 97.22RMB, we use about 60ish credits a month which works out to an electricity bill of about 4-5 US dollars a month at current exchange rates.

unfortunately you do not have the ability to choose "green" electricity in Beijing so the best we can do is to use a little as possible. The source of all of this cheap (to us) electricity isn't all that great but things are changing...

Christmas in China

The only way I can describe Christmas in China is "between two worlds". China is officially an atheist country thus Christmas isn't a holiday. Schools are in, post offices are open, stores are open, etc. Christmas is not a holiday. In reality if it weren't for the years upon years of western influence Christmas wouldn't exist in China. Christmas, however, does exist in China.

Christmas trees, although not abundant, are around. Christmas lights are strung, decorations are everywhere. You get the point. I think it can be best described as commercial Christmas exists in China.

Our Christmas this year was a bit different than years past especially since we actually went to class on Christmas day. We celebrated none the less.

This is yet another quickly shot and rapidly edited video. This is how we celebrated Christmas. A good lunch, massage, good dinner, wine and chocolate. A very western day on a western holiday.

My life isn't very exciting. I wake up, shower, go to class, study, eat, study, come home, eat, study. If you watch this video it'll verify it for you.

It includes clips of our apartment, the many subway trains I take, people I see everyday, my school, the "Study English" bar (where I, ironically, study Chinese) and many other things. Like all my videos its quickly put together and by no means professional.

First apartment in Beijing

This past Saturday Diana and I moved into our first apartment in Beijing. The three week long apartment search is finally over and I think we have found the nearest-to-perfect-est apartment we could have found. I really do like it. Everyday I am finding something new about the apartment and the neighborhood that I like.

This quick n' dirty video is from our move on Saturday. I was really, really tired during our move and I'm really glad that we don't own that much stuff. A single 30RMB taxi ride from 五道口 to 和平里北街 and we were done! Now we just have to "fill out" the house with all those little things (chopsticks, cookware, towels, sheets, pillowcases, bookshelves, shoe racks, etc. etc.)

Thanksgiving in China

This thanksgiving we are, again, far away from the family. This time we're in Beijing, China. As Thanksgiving is an American holiday (for obvious reasons) we were not able to celebrate in the traditional fashion. As a substitute for turkey we went out for Peking duck! Afterwards as an insanely special treat we went to Haggen-Daaz!

Haggen-Daaz is incredibly expensive in China as they do it all fancy-like. Diana and I decided that it was a special occasion and we were "treating" ourselves. I may be hyper-critical of the U.S and its current policies but I'm still a proud American and will take the time to celebrate the holidays. Of course what makes me proud to be an American is my ability to change the policies! 2008 is just around the corner!

A Turkey in China

Near our language school (wo dao ku) there is a store named the "Western food store". It is about the size of a small bodega in NYC or tiny 7-11 elsewhere (maybe 400-500sq ft). We went in just out of curiousity and to our amazement we found 3 Norbest Turkeys in the icecream freezer. I have *never* seen a Turkey in China in almost any form. This was an actual Norbest brand Turkey straight from the U.S!

Ordering dumplings in Chinese

Well my spirits are back and if you watch this video you'll know why. This afternoon I went to a dumpling restaurant for lunch but not only could I read the sign of the restaurant's name but I could also read about 20% of the menu (maybe 30%). That was, apparently enough for me to go into the restaurant alone and order off a menu that contained no numbers, no pictures and no English. When it gets down to it if you don't read Chinese you're not ordering from this restaurant.

OK before you start thinking that I can actually speak and read this language let me attempt to translate my conversation with the waitress. The misspelling and bad grammar is intentional.

Me: Hairo
Her: Hello, its blah, blah, blah, cold, blah, blah
Me: yus tis feld today
Me: I cen sut dar? (pointing)
Her: yes, you can sit blah, blah, blah, blah OK?
Me: OK (thinking to myself.. what did she say after sit)
Her: What would you like?
Me: I would like day tea
her: Hot tea?
Me: (fixing pronunciation) OH, yes, yes Hot tea
Her: Would you blah, blah, pot blah, blah tea blah, blah, blah cup
Me: cop, cop, plis
some various conversation exchange and now we get to the ordering
Me: I wood lick one odor da exploded dumplings
The word for fried and exploded is the same except for tone, one is 2nd tone the other is 4th. I'm pretty sure I said it in 4th tone.
Her: Sorry we don't have those. We have blah, blah, chicken blah, blah, blah, pork, blah, blah, blah, some vegetable thing, blah, blah, blah, blah. you blah blah want?
Me: I wood like some old sour flower dumplings
Her: Huh?
Me: (pointing to menu)
Her: OH, Dumplings with aged vinegar andd peanuts! Sorry, we don't have those.
Her: we have....
Me: Boiled lamb dumplings please

OK now for the disclaimer. Boiled lamb dumplings is what Diana and I ordered the first time we went to this restaurant and it was my fall back. I asked for four different items and they were out of all of them. These four items, with several variations, were about the only items that I could read on the menu... so I was stuck.

Back to the studying!

Chinese Halloween

This evening I went to the local Halloween festivities held in front of the "Park-n-shop" about 5 blocks from where I'm staying in 中山, 中国(ZhongShan, China). Although they don't celebrate Halloween in the same way as we do in the U.S (i.e. going door to door asking for candy) they definitely celebrate it. Tons of people were in costume although there were probably 10 times as many people simply watching the crazy costumed group.

I also noticed that all the foreigners of the town came out in force. I've gone days and days without seeing a single foreigner in this town. In fact its pretty rare that we do see a foreigner but they were all out this evening AND in costume!

yummm.. Lunch

Yesterday Diana's parents took us to yet another restaurant. In comparison to other restaurants this one had one major difference; it was gaudy. Oh ya. super crazy weird things all over the place for no apparent reason (at least to a westerner). The front of the restaurant has a giant pigeon (their mascot as well as the dish they are famous for) and inside were Snow White and her seven dwarfs alongside various other cartoon characters. My guess is that the cartoon characters were actually extremely well disguised Ninjas. As to why Ninjas would guard a Chinese restaurant, well that's for you to figure out (thing of a better explanation for the characters).

The food was really good and extremely sweet. I felt as though every dish, except the noodles, was actually a dessert in disguise. It was all tasty though. It would definitely go again.

Read Diana's write up on it. She takes much more time to write her blog entries than I do. Now go forth and watch the video and see the restaurant for yourself!

Back to ZhongShan （中山）

Yesterday we returned from a 3 day trip to the nearby trip to Guangzhou. We headed to Guangzhou because I needed to open up my HSBC China bank account and Diana's father needed to renew his passport. Unfortunately HSBC is still new to China so I wasn't able to get a debit card for my account instead they said and I'm not joking "The cards might be here in a few weeks or November or December possibly January, we don't know". So, in short, I would have a way to deposit money into my account but no way of taking money out of the account. This is, of course, pointless.

Anyhow onto the video. On the busride back I was listening to the band "Post Harbor" on my iPod and decided to shoot a little bit of video. I cobbled together that various items I shot, threw the mp3 as a soundtrack and uploaded it. Its another one of the "through my eyes" type video as opposed to something polished. I really just don't have the time for editing anymore and I kind of like the rough "just get it up there" video.

Zhong Shan (中山）

This is a raw unedited look at my day. Its around 9 minutes long and if you don't know me this is going to be really, really boring but if you're curious what I'm seeing on a day-to-day basis this would give you a partial idea. Its really of value only to the family ;)

The day is Monday October 1st and the location is Zhong Shan (中山), China(中国) where Diana's parents live. In the morning, 8am-ish, Diana, myself, and her parent's walked about ten blocks to a rather fancy restaurant located on the 5th floor of the nearby mall. At the restaurant we met up with her Grandparents, her dad's friends, her mom's friends and various other familial-type relations the extent of which I don't know. We had a traditional Chinese breakfast, "Dim Sum".

Dim Sum describes both the type of food served and the style in which it is served. Dim Sum consists of several small dishes served in a rotating fashion. In the US these dishes would be similar in size and portion to an appetizer. The dishes are items such as vegetables, buns, dumplings, sliced pork, ribs or other 1-3 bite items. Essentially anything that you can pick up with chopsticks and eat within a few bites is a Dim Sum dish. Its not uncommon to order a dish that has only 3 buns in it despite the fact that there are 10 people at the table. You simply order 11 various dishes so that there is enough variety for everyone. Also I should note that the rule is to order one dish for every person plus on additional thus for 10 people you would order 11, its tradition and polite.

The style of Dim Sum is also a defining feature. We were in a private room at the restaurant so we ordered from one of the waiters. A few people at the table took charge and selected many small dishes from a large menu of available items. The items were then brought in one by one throughout the course of the meal. The items are placed on a lazy susan in the middle of the table and we all just dug in ;). If a dish placed in front of you doesn't look appetizing just spin the lazy susan until something looks good! Had we been in the main dining hall we could have either ordered from the menu or waited until one of the many food carts came to our table. A food cart has several various dishes on it (same as the menu) and looks similar to the 50s-era desert carts.

Anyhow.. that's Dim Sum. Insanely popular and extremely good.

After Dim Sum we went to the Supermarket to pick up some fruit and veggies. This is the majority of the video. Its really nothing more than me letting the camera roll while I walked around the supermarket.

I definitely need to point out that Monday was National Day and the week is called "Golden Week". National day is like USA's Independence day. Almost everyone in the country is off of work for the entire week. Its packed everywhere!

Finally.. I screwed up. This wasn't Monday it was Tuesday the 2nd. My camera said Monday because it was still set for Pacific Standard Time, 15 hours behind, and I believed it. Whoops!

Rim of the world

After spending a day at Joshua Tree and another day/night in Big Bear Diana and I headed back to the great city of Los Angeles via the scenic route. This winding road is called "The Rim of the world". I can only assume its named that because L.A believed that they were/are the edge of the world because really.. what's beyond L.A? hhmm. San Diego, Mexico, Central America, South America.... Ok just a few things.

The road was built around the end of the Great Depression as both a "make work" program and a way to revive the spirits of Americans by giving them a freakin' amazing view. When we drove the "Rim of the world" it was almost exactly the opposite of a depression but it was still one heck of a view!

Hiking in Denver

Over Labor day weekend Tony, Deb, Diana and I went up to Mt. Evans in Denver, Colorado to do some hiking. On Sunday morning we drove as close as we could to basecamp which was still about 3 miles away and a few thousand feet below. We hiked up and into the Colorado woods quite literally. After setting up camp, building a nice fire and getting a good nights sleep we decided to do some more hiking. This time we opted to just go up a "little" hill next to our campsite.

The little hill turned out to be a few thousand feet tall and we nearly summitted Mt. Evans. Even though I say nearly what I really mean is that we did summit it. That is what I'm going to tell you, all of my friends, everyone I meet and every single one of my nieces, nephews, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren.

Oh did I mention that it was up hill in the snow both ways? Well it was.

Leaving Florida

A week ago Diana and I left Florida after spending two weeks visiting my family. She and I are moving to China so I'm not exactly sure when I'm going to see my parents and family again although I don't think it will be too long. We said our goodbyes and wished each other well but I, unfortunately, didn't film any of it. Instead I filmed me saying goodbye to all of the material objects left behind. My guitars, the pool, the house and Jake (but he's not a material object).

Through this video I'm not attempting to put material objects in front of family. This video is mainly a reminder to myself that my life is about to dramatically change. I've sold, donated, or stashed away almost every material object in my life. My entire material life is contained withing 1 suitcase, 1 backpack and 1/2 a duffel bag (and Diana's the same). When I left Florida it all became real my life is changing and there is no going back.

In a few weeks or months we'll arrive in China and begin what essentially amounts to a new life. We'll be living in a new country, new city in a new apartment. Furniture, cookware, appliances, beds, couches, chairs, linens, etc. will have to be repurchased. Our traditions recreational activities will most likely have to be replaced with something new. We will have to find new friends and new hangouts. Our entire lives will be completely turned upside down.

I'm welcoming this change with open arms and I can't wait to land in my new home! China awaits... but first Denver, Colorado and more family in California.

The final goodbye has yet to come...

Train Ride to Florida

The train ride to Florida on Amtrak was awesome although our roomette (Actual name) was rather small. It did, however, have everything that Diana and I needed for a short overnight trip (27 hours) from New York City to Tampa, Florida.

I would definitely do it again!
